Reeperbahn Festival Socials

Dear media partners, dear colleagues,
As is well known, the Reeperbahn Festival is always on the go – and that’s not set to change this year. Today we’re pleased to announce the ANCHOR 2016 – Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award!

Hamburg, 18 August 2016
Artists like Bon Iver, Lykke Li, Jake Bugg, Ed Sheeran, and Janelle Monáe played some of their first major international gigs at the Reeperbahn Festival. Europe’s largest club festival offers more live performances of new music from around the world than just about any other comparable event. For some time now, the festival’s many music fans have been joined by international music industry professionals who come to the Reeperbahn Festival looking to expand their networks and do business. The result is frequent and welcome contact between fans and industry – and the ANCHOR 2016 provides another occasion for the two to meet.

Eight nominees. One jury. One prize.
Eight acts from all over the world will perform in competition; a jury of internationally renowned experts will judge; and, at the end of the festival, the first ever ANCHOR Award will be presented! All eight nominees are up-and-coming talents in their home countries (which include the USA, the UK, Sweden, Germany, and Australia). For them, competing for the ANCHOR is “a major challenge, but, most of all, it’s a fantastic opportunity”, says Reeperbahn Festival managing director Alexander Schulz. The ANCHOR has set itself the goal of gaining an importance in the music world not unlike that of the Cannes Palme d’Or in the film world – a distinction that is well-known and respected by the audience, industry, and artists alike. For fans and the music industry, the ANCHOR is to be an international seal of quality; for the contestants, it’s to be a jump-start toward building an international career.

We believe this goal will be achieved – and Tony Visconti does too. Visconti, David Bowie’s long-time producer, will be one of the members of the jury, which is tasked with finding the best act among those nominated. He will also be at the show on 24 September at the close of the Reeperbahn Festival when the winner of the ANCHOR 2016 is to be selected. Most of all, however, he’ll be mingling with the crowds at Molotow and the Imperial Theater, attending the nominees’ performances during the three days of the competition. “Originality is what I look for. And outstanding talent, of course. The key to success, however, is passion!”, says Visconti. And, as he and the other jury members will discover, there will be no shortage of passion in this competition for the first international distinction to be awarded by a music festival! The jury and the nominees will be announced shortly.
