Reeperbahn Festival – an investment in the future of music

There is no better way to get to the heart of the Reeperbahn Festival than the producer legend Tony Visconti put it: “The Reeperbahn Festival is an investment in new talents.“ And consequently a direct investment in the future of music. This is the concept that, for the 11th time, thrilled fans and representatives of the industry alike, making Hamburg the centre of the international music world again for four days.
The new international music competition ANCHOR attracted the most attention among the numerous premieres taking place at this year’s Reeperbahn Festival. It was closely followed by the world’s first performance of Matthias Arfmann’s “Ballet Jeunesse“. Above all, however, the entire Reeperbahn Festival was a fabulous party, which we are proud to look back to.

We were proud to welcome 38,000 guests on four days to the 2016 Reeperbahn Festival, 4,400 of them international delegates from 40 nations.

On Saturday evening, the ANCHOR jury gathered around Tony Visconti announced the first ANCHOR winner at the St. Pauli Theater: Albin Lee Meldau.
“With his magic and brooding anger, he is definitely a maverick, akin to the David Bowies and Freddy Mercurys of the world!” the jury reasoned.
Alexander Schulz: “Right from the start, the heart of the Reeperbahn Festival has been the presentation of new talents. Including a competition is an absolute novelty at music festivals, focusing the goals of our event: To be the first event worldwide to present new music and music-business related trends and promoting further and positive development of artists. At the ANCHOR competition, nominees are judged by a competent and prominent jury on the basis of their live performances".

Next year’s feature country will be Canada, a country from which great music has come for years and with which the Reeperbahn Festival has had a long-standing partnership.

Stuart Johnston, CIMA President: “The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) is honoured that Canada will be the feature country at Reeperbahn Festival in 2017, a year in which our country celebrates its 150th birthday. It is therefore fitting that CIMA’s Canadian Blast showcases will shine a light on our great Canadian talent at both Canada House and other venues. Music Export Canada, a collective partnership of all Canada’s regional exporters, will be out in full force, working together with CIMA to provide many other showcase partnerships, business events and opportunities for Canadians to meet Reeperbahn delegates in 2017. CIMA is proud to have the support of the Canadian Embassy in Berlin as Canada celebrates its 150th year in style with great music at Reeperbahn Festival 2017.”

Reeperbahn Festival Conference
Once again we have successfully continued our cooperation with partners such as the VUT Indie Days with their extended programme, the VIA! VUT Indie Awards and the NEXT16 digital conference, while new threads and platforms made their appearance during the Reeperbahn Festival Conference. In this context we would like to emphasise “The State of Modern Classical Music“ with numerous new formats of panels, sessions, networking, and two classic concert nights at resonanzraum.
Moreover, there is the new Education & Training Programm@Reeperbahn for newcomers of the creative sector, with know-how all around the topic virtual reality, the Audio Branding Academy for brand sound design, as well as corporate sessions for young entrepreneurs from the music industry.

Detlef Schwarte, Director Reeperbahn Festival Conference: “This year the conference has again grown sustainably. This means, we can offer a more and more diversified platform to the international music industry and many of its adjacent sectors without changing the unique character of our event. The consistently positive feedback by conference participants and by numerous international partners who have enriched our programme with showcases, receptions, meetings and presentations, are encouraging us to further develop the Reeperbahn Festival as the central European venue for and with the music business.“
