20 – 23 SEPTEMBER PRESS RELEASE
Reeperbahn Festival Socials

Dear media partners, dear colleagues,
It’s no secret that there continues to be plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the role of women – and this holds true in the music industry as well, in all its various sectors. Encouraging news, therefore, that the two-year project “Keychange – Women in Music”, which aims to rectify this state of affairs, has received support from the EU Commission in the amount of €200,000. The programme will be introduced by its seven European partners at Reeperbahn Festival in September. But, wait, there’s more – for what would a music festival be without bands and artists? Announcing 20 new confirmations.

Hamburg, 5 May 2017
Reeperbahn Festival is proud to be joining the German Association of Independent Music Companies (VUT) as the German partner of Keychange, a project initiated by the British Performing Rights Society (PRS) Foundation. The kick-off of Keychange, including a presentation of the programme, will be celebrated at Reeperbahn Festival 2017. Keychange’s objective is to strengthen the role of women in all areas of music and to highlight both the creative and economic potential that women’s contributions in music can unlock. Creative Europe, the European Union programme for the cultural and creative sectors, is supporting the two-year project with €200,000. The range of Keychange partners and supporters spans across the whole of Europe and includes Iceland Airwaves (Iceland), BIME (Spain), The Great Escape (UK), Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), MusickCentrum/Way Out West (Sweden), and Mutek (associated: Canada).
Additional information about Keychange and the PRS Foundation can be found here.

Twenty new bands and artists for Reeperbahn Festival 2017 have been confirmed and can now be announced. That political messages about the role of women, same-sex love, marginalisation and exclusion, and much more, go extremely well with a terrifically danceable mix of disco and punk is something fans of Beth Ditto’s (US, photo) former band Gossip are well aware of. Ditto, the singer with the magnificent soul voice, will be at Reeperbahn Festival presenting her forthcoming debut album. While the release of Maxïmo Park’s (GB) debut dates back to 2004, the band around high-energy singer Paul Smith demonstrates, via their new album, “Risk to Exist”, why they are still one of the best live acts from the UK. “Mali Blues”, a film about the unifying power of music in a country oppressed by IS, won last year’s Unerhört! film award at Reeperbahn Festival. Songhoy Blues (ML) from Mali underscores the significance of this film – the band plays a desert blues that combines gruff punk guitars with the classic groove of music from Mali. With their hit “Let’s Go Surfing”, The Drums (US) from Brooklyn managed to fill every indie dancefloor. June will see the release of their new album, which is set to provide a fresh supply of floorfillers. The Districts (US), four young men from Philadelphia, have been turning heads across the indie-rock community since “A Flourish and a Spoil” and combine a respect for music history with an individual sound in a super-laid-back way. Techno marching band MEUTE (DE) from Hamburg is evidence that the classic brass band can do the job of a techno DJ without a whole lot of effort. And the inclusion of The Amazons (GB) in the festival line-up means one of the UK’s most rousing new rock bands is headed to Hamburg and Reeperbahn Festival.

Other new confirmations: Candelilla (DE), Newton Faulkner (GB), Skott (SE), This Is The Kit (FR I GB), Novo Amor (GB), Theme Park (GB), LIFE (GB), OUTLYA (GB), Tom Rogerson (GB), BRUTUS (BE), SWMRS (US),  INHEAVEN (GB), Mavi Phoenix (AT)
