Reeperbahn Festival Socials

Dear media partners, dear colleagues,
More and more German bands and artists are taking their careers beyond Germany’s borders to neighbouring European countries – and from there, as the case recently with duo BOY, many are even achieving international success outside of Europe. The number of German bands and artists that possess this potential has been growing steadily over the past several years. Reason enough for Reeperbahn Festival, as one of the most important meeting places for the international music industry, to showcase these talents. Each year, as part of “Wunderkinder – German Music Talent” – a project that was launched in 2013 and is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) – Reeperbahn Festival brings a carefully selected delegation of international talent buyers to Hamburg and introduces them to the 10 new German bands and artists with the most promising international career prospects.

As is well known, there are certain German words that have firmly established themselves in the English-speaking world – words for which English lacks its own terms. Besides “kindergarten”, one of the most prominent examples is “wunderkind”, a word used to describe a particularly talented young person. And so what could be a better title for a programme that showcases 10 new German bands and artists who are well-positioned to take their careers to an international level than “Wunderkinder – German Music Talent”?

As one of the main hubs and meeting places for the international music business, Reeperbahn Festival annually attracts an extremely high number of decision-makers who come to Hamburg not only to maintain their existing professional networks and to make new contacts but also to look for new talent to sign.

An ideal setting, then, to bring together 10 new German bands and artists whose music has the potential to appeal to audiences outside Germany, and to introduce these bands and artists to an exclusive selection of international talent buyers (festival bookers, managers, and record company representatives). The intention behind “Wunderkinder – German Music Talent” is to present these artists to the international market and offer them a chance at global recognition.

The Wunderkinder project is now in its fifth consecutive year and, as always, the selected wunderkinder will appear at three Reeperbahn Festival clubs on the festival’s first day – which this year falls on 20 September – and showcase their talents to the music industry representatives in attendance. In the past, German newcomers such as Drangsal, FIL BO RIVA, Kid Simius, Roosevelt, and many others, took part in the Wunderkinder project and then went on to play international festivals, including Eurosonic, Iceland Airwaves, and South by Southwest, and to work with international booking agencies and management companies.
Another great example is Berlin-based Gurr, one of the Wunderkinder bands in 2016. According to Grant Box, speaking on behalf of Gurr: “Right after participating in Reeperbahn Festival’s Wunderkinder project, Gurr were taken on by X-Ray booking for worldwide booking and by Four Artists for Germany; they were also booked for performances at SXSW, The Great Escape, Iceland Airwaves, and Eurosonic. All this led to other big things for the band and has been a big part of their growing success both in Germany and internationally. They’ve now done sold-out shows in the UK and Germany.”
