Dear media representatives, dear colleagues,
The immense diversity of the current international music scene is also reflected in the music programme of the Reeperbahn Festival which, in terms of style, is as wide-ranging as never before this year! Here again 46 new bands and artists.
Frehn Hawel

Hamburg, 31 August 2017
Rap, electro, singer-songwriter, neo-classic, hard rock, yacht rock, punk rock, indie rock and hip-hop in all their conceivable varieties – today’s musical landscape, with its wide range, might be absolutely overwhelming for some people, but there is one thing it is definitely not: one-dimensional. As the Reeperbahn Festival has always been a representation of diversity this year’s line-up is reflecting this broad scope of genres.

Haiyti (DE) (photo) and her music easily succeed in building a bridge between the brutal street rap of her mix tape “City Tarif” and the emotional intensity of her “Toxic” EP. Moreover, her modern sound aesthetics break with traditional genre patterns, something that makes the Hamburg-born artist the trap queen of the north. For more than ten years the band OK KID around the singer Jonas Schubert have been combining indie rock and hip-hop with subtle electro sounds. At the Reeperbahn Festival, they can be experienced as KID OK (OK KID sound system) (DE). Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson stemming from the Westman Island celebrated his debut by the stage name of Júníus Meyvant with “Floating Harmonies” merging the sound universe of Bon Iver with the soul of the 70s, proving that soul can also evolve in the roughest of climates. For the third time already song writer Alice Phoebe Lou (ZA) will be performing at the Reeperbahn Festival – and thanks to her enchanting voice and the directness of her songs, published on her debut album “Orbit” last year - her venues are getting bigger. This year she will perform at St. Michaelis Church. Those who wonder who is currently writing the best German indie rock lyrics by far will be well acquainted with panic singer Andreas Spechtl (AT). Spechtl is living proof of the fact that strong-minded artist intent and sophisticated analytical lyrics go very well with low-fi universal tunes. Because of the enormous distance of the continent to the Old World it is not always easy for artists from Australia to show a sustained presence in Europe. We are all the more grateful that they can be seen and heard here in Germany again: Raise the curtains for folk pop song writer Vance Joy (AU) known to many by this distinctive voice and, not the least, his 2013 hit “Riptide”. At the Reeperbahn Festival he will present new songs such as “Lay It On Me“, recently published. The Italian artist Federico Albanese (IT) distinguishes himself by an extremely successful attempt at modern classical music. His minimalistic piano playing meets dynamical synthesizer arpeggios, giving rise to atmospheric marvels between ambient and classic as shown by his current publication “The Blue Hours”, released within the framework of the “Neue Meister” (New Masters) series.
