The First Speakers For 2018

As always in the merry month of May we are pleased to announce the first speakers for the Reeperbahn Festival Conference. The tenth edition of the conference will be kicked off by Carl Leighton-Pope (Founder and CEO, The Leighton-Pope Organisation, UK), our first conference speaker in 2009, who will provide us with what is sure to be a highly memorable look back at the last ten years of the music business. We are equally looking forward to hearing from prominent industry figures Peter Schwenkow (Founder and CEO, Deutsche Entertainment AG, DE), Tina Funk (General Manager, Vevo, DE), Hans-Holger Albrecht (CEO, Deezer, and President, Digital Music Europe, DE), and Cherie Hu (US), first winner of the Reeperbahn Festival’s International Music Journalism Award in the category Music Business Journalist of the Year.

At this year’s conference we’re expecting up to 5,000 delegates from more than 50 countries attending on behalf of 3,000 companies and organisations from the music industry and related creative sectors. The conference programme will include around 150 sessions, 50 showcases, 25 general meetings of organisations, and 80 networking events and award shows.

Carl Leighton-Pope

The British concert agent Carl Leighton-Pope, whose clients include Bryan Adams, Michael Bublé, and The Chippendales, was the first international guest speaker at the premiere of the Reeperbahn Festival Conference in 2009. We’ve invited him back to Hamburg and asked him to take a look at the last ten years of the music business – and we look forward to one of his legendary, highly entertaining speeches about concerts, colleagues and creatives titled „Reeperbahn Reloaded“.

Peter Schwenkow

Deutsche Entertainment AG founder and CEO Prof. Peter Schwenkow is one of the most respected and influential personalities in the European live entertainment market. He led his company from the era of concert impresarios into the modern age of stock-listed concert conglomerates. At our conference he will speak about DEAG’s 40th anniversary, secondary ticketing, and what he thinks will be the entertainment formats of the future. The interview will be conducted by Manfred Gillig-Degrave

Tina Funk

In 2013, Tina Funk launched the German subsidiary of Vevo, the world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform, as General Manager for the territory. In a career in the entertainment business spanning 30 years, she started out in journalism and switched to the music business in the nineties with stops first at Virgin Records and Intercord, then in leading positions at Richard Branson's V2, Daniel Miller's Mute Records and EMI before founding a company together with entertainment law firm ScheuermannWesterhoffStrittmatter. At Reeperbahn Festival Conference 2018 Tina Funk will share her insights into the new era in synchronization as part of our thematic strand music.brands.(e)motion.

Hans-Holger Albrecht

Dr. Hans-Holger Albrecht is global CEO and member of the board of directors at Deezer. He is also president of Digital Music Europe, which represents Europe’s leading digital music innovators, including Deezer, Spotify, and SoundCloud who have revolutionised how people discover, enjoy, and experience music. Dr. Albrecht has held a number of leadership positions including of president and CEO of Millicom and Modern Times Group. We are looking forward to hearing his views on how Europe can continue to lead the way in the field of music streaming, as well as his views on the future of the music streaming industry.

Cherie Hu

Cherie Hu is probably the most eloquent new voice in music journalism. As a writer and researcher she is focused on digital/tech trends and emerging markets. She writes her own columns for Billboard and Forbes, with additional bylines in Music Ally, Synchtank and the Harvard Political Review. In 2017, at age 21, she received the Reeperbahn Festival’s inaugural award for Music Business Journalist of the Year by vote of the Reeperbahn Festival delegates. Reason enough to invite her to the 2018 conference and hear what she has to say about the shifts in music consumption caused by streaming and the obvious and subtle effects AI-generated music has on the wider industry.
