![]() Last year at Reeperbahn Festival we were honoured to host the launch of the Keychange initiative in conjunction with PRS Foundation, Iceland Airwaves, BIME, Tallinn Music Week, Way Out West, Musikcentrum Sweden, Liverpool Sound City and MUTEK. Since that launch the campaign has gone from strength to strength, gathering international attention with more than 125 festivals joining the 50/50 by 2022 Keychange pledge. This year at Reeperbahn Festival we’re celebrating this progress by declaring Thursday 20 September “Keychange Day”, featuring a packed programme of workshops, in-depth discussions about the Keychange programme as well as Linda Perry, Tony Visconti and many others discussing how we continue pushing for equality in the music industry. Frehn Hawel Hamburg, 13 September 2018 Garbage singer and ANCHOR 2017 Jury member Shirley Manson put it in a nutshell at a panel on gender equality: "We must stop applauding men for doing the right thing." Even if the discussion about equal chances for all genders feels like a well-established reasonable thing which everyone can benefit from, the path to its successful implementation is still a long way off. The music industry has been engaged with the issue since 2017. Meanwhile Keychange counts on 125 international music festivals and conferences voluntarily committing themselves to present a balanced gender ratio in their concert line-ups and conference programmes by 2022. Just as important as voluntary participation of these festivals is the fact that the discussion shows international repercussions. The urgent question is what next steps are necessary to achieve structural improvement in the music industry and culture. Keychange Day On Thursday 20 September 2018, the Reeperbahn Festival will focus on the current issues of gender equality in diverse open panels, workshops and discussions at the Spiegelzelt of the Festival Villages. Programme participants and representatives of the music industry and culture will join forces in the search for new insights that will effect sustainable change.
